So I’ve been having a bit of Doctor Who fest lately since all the Ecclestone episodes are being replayed by the Beeb. And I noticed something weird. The opening title sequence is exactly like running a train through a tunnel. There are sections of tunnel and a bit of a light show going on with the power rails arcing and it’s a long, winding whoosh! There are even occasionally side-tunnels although they don’t tend to be at such dramatic angles as the time-tunnels. The main difference is that for some reason we’ve added go-faster stripes to parts of the tunnel. Appropriately enough this tends to be in the areas where there is a bit of a slope and the train actually does move faster. I’ve never been able to work out what they are for.
